pm group provide financial support on an annual basis to Lebenshilfe Offenbach, a non-profit association founded by concerned parents in 1963, and is an independent society for people with mental disabilities and their families, specialists, friends and sponsors.
The local and district “Lebenshilfe” are supervised by individual associations responsible for the federal states of Germany. In our case, this is the association for the State of Hessen, and the German Federal “Lebenshilfe” Association. There are a total of about 135,000 members all over Germany.
The main aim of their work is to support the welfare of mentally disabled people and their families. They are committed to ensuring that every single individual with a mental disability can live as independently as possible in a community with other people, and receives all the protection and support that he or she requires.
They work together with parents, relatives, friends and specialists to support and assist people with mental disabilities and multiple disabilities. The wide range of activities they offer are funded by donations, grants from local authorities and membership fees.
They introduce disabled preschool children to the concept of working and living together, play with them, do sports activities with them and work in mother and child groups.
They use music, exercise and movement, arts and crafts and games to help disabled school-age children to develop their self-confidence and social awareness.
They want to support and promote the skills and abilities of disabled young people and adults and help them to avoid having to live isolated lives. They make music with them, play sports, do rhythmic gymnastics, organise group trips and holiday camps, and go to theatre shows and exhibitions.
They also work in close cooperation with the parents of disabled individuals by running discussion groups, providing information and advice, and sharing experiences.
The fact that the committee, management board and treasurers all work in free private premises on a voluntary basis means that they are able to use all of the donations and grants that they receive for to help and support disabled people.
